Wildlife Hazard Training Module for Airports

Project: Wildlife Hazard Training Module for Airports
Client: Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA)
Location: Jacksonville, Florida

Amarillo International Airport

Since 2005, Environmental Resource Solutions, Inc. (ERS) has organized and led the wildlife hazard management training course taught annually to personnel at Jacksonville’s International Airport (JAX) and General Aviation (GA) airports (Herlong, Craig, and Cecil Field). ERS also conducts annual audits of compliance with the Wildlife Hazard Management Program and potential new wildlife hazards for the same four airports. Utilizing these audits, we are able to provide an annual update of the current wildlife hazard situation for each airport and present our recommendations during the training session.

ERS instructs on the best practices approach to wildlife hazard management, including how to properly identify wildlife, common wildlife attractants and habitats found on airport property, and the latest and most effective wildlife control methods for avoiding and/or eliminating these hazards. Our training also includes all of the Federal Aviation Authority’s (FAA) training requirements, in accordance with FAA Advisory Circular 150/5200-36 “Qualifications for Wildlife Biologist Conducting Wildlife Hazard Assessments and Training Curriculums for Airport Personnel Involved in Controlling Wildlife Hazards at Airports”, and as such, a quiz is given to each attendee at the conclusion of the training session. We emphasize the prevention of wildlife strikes by informing airport personnel on how to effectively prevent a strike before it occurs.

ERS coordinates with JAA and the FAA to ensure that all of JAA’s wildlife concerns are addressed. We also assist JAA with obtaining their necessary permits from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to allow staff to legally take wildlife that could potentially be a threat to public safety.

ERS developed a Wildlife Identification Field Guide for the JAA airports to assist them in properly identifying any observed wildlife species and collecting accurate data for the wildlife strike database reports. A copy of this Guide can be provided upon request. ERS continues to consult with JAA on wildlife hazard management training and related wildlife issues at airports. We maintain detailed data from each airport regarding all wildlife strikes and takings.
